Depois disso, foi ciceroneado pelo ex-presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso para encontros com outros grandes empresários, como Roberto Setubal e Pedro Moreira Salles, do Itaú Unibanco. A informação foi publicada numa nota na coluna Radar, de Lauro Jardim, em que FHC confirmou ter dado a largada para o projeto "Aécio 2014".
No quadro atual, suas chances parecem irrisórias. A última pesquisa CNT mostrou Lula com 69% das intenções de voto (se decidisse ser candidato), Dilma Rousseff com 59% e Aécio Neves com apenas 11%. Mas tanto FHC como Aécio apostam num desgaste de Dilma em razão da continuidade da crise internacional, que tem reduzido as projeções de crescimento da economia brasileira – em 2012, pelo segundo ano consecutivo, a taxa de expansão do PIB deve se situar abaixo de 2%.
O discurso político de Aécio vem sendo construído em sintonia com FHC. E a principal tribuna é uma coluna semanal na Folha de S. Paulo, publicada sempre às segundas-feiras, em que o senador mineiro tem abordado temas discutidos com o ex-presidente e depois reverberados por outros colunistas. Na Folha, Aécio já fez um elogio da privatização tardia assumida por Dilma, no caso das concessões, e criticou a chamada "herança maldita" da Petrobras, chamada por ele de PTBras.
Recentemente, o senador mineiro também fez questão de prestigiar uma homenagem prestada ao ex-presidente FHC nos Estados Unidos, quando ele recebeu uma medalha da Biblioteca do Congresso americano. Aécio faz parte do grupo que gostaria de resgatar a imagem pública de FHC. No entanto, o próprio PSDB o considera um mau cabo eleitoral. Tanto que o esconde nos programas de seus candidatos – ao contrário do que ocorre com Lula no PT. "O partido quer que ele apareça mais, mas o ex-presidente tem uma agenda extensa de compromissos", justifica o presidente da sigla, Sérgio Guerra.
