Brazil calls for Security Council meeting to discuss escalation between Israel and Palestine
Earlier, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned the Hamas attack
247 - Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira confirmed on Saturday (7) that the United Nations (UN) Security Council, chaired by Brazil in the month of October, will meet on Sunday to discuss the recent escalation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians, according to diplomats. Vieira is en route to Southeast Asia, but in direct contact with Brasilia and the Brazilian mission to the UN in New York.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Hamas attack and called for "all diplomatic efforts to prevent a larger conflagration." President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also highlighted Brazil's commitment to preventing the escalation of the conflict, "including in the exercise of the Presidency of the UN Security Council."
On Saturday (7), Mohammad Deif, Commander-in-Chief of the al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, announced the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood after a barrage of rockets was fired and an infiltration operation in the Gaza Envelope settlements.
The Israeli army then confirmed that Hamas took control of the settlements in the Gaza Envelope. Media reports also noted that Hamas managed to take over seven Israeli settlements, as images of settlers running in panic during the Operation were widespread.
According to Israeli media, Red Alert sirens were activated in Tel Aviv, about 70 kilometers from the Gaza Strip, as well as in Sde Boker, Arad, and Dimona to the south, also more than 70 kilometers away. Later, rockets were fired at Jerusalem.
The toll of the attacks so far is tragic. More than 250 Israelis have died and at least a thousand were injured in attacks carried out by the Palestinian group. In response, the Israeli armed forces acted swiftly and harshly against the population of Gaza, resulting in the death of more than 230 people and injuring 1,600, according to local health authorities.
