247 - Brazil, represented by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, ratified on this Thursday (9), the Constitution Treaty of the Police Community of the Americas (Ameripol).

A total of 13 countries from South, Central America, and the Caribbean ratified the Ameripol treaty at the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice, which will be an instrument for the joint fight against transnational organized crime, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ameripol has been in operation since 2007 but lacked a formal legal statute, which is now realized with the establishment of the "Brasília Treaty."

Ameripol was founded by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, and Ecuador.

The main task of the new police community is to maintain the coordination of the public security forces of the participating countries in the prevention, investigation, and combating of transnational crimes, according to the treaty text. The organization will facilitate international police cooperation through the exchange of information, consultations, and joint investigations, headquartered in the capital of Colombia, Bogotá.
