247 - Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Gilmar Mendes emphatically defended his colleague Alexandre de Moraes, who has been targeted by attacks from the bolsonarist far-right and international groups. Criticism of Moraes intensified after reports by Glenn Greenwald, published in Folha de São Paulo, accused the magistrate of irregularities in conducting investigations against bolsonarists.

Gilmar Mendes, while denying the accusations, was adamant in stating that Moraes, as the rapporteur of the inquiries, "has the duty to investigate every criminal act brought to his attention." Gilmar further emphasized that, at the time of the events, Moraes was part of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), exercising police powers to ensure the integrity of the election.

The minister also repudiated comparisons between Moraes' actions and the methods of Operation Lava Jato, stating that such analogies "are irresponsible and without factual correlation." According to Gilmar, "Moro, Dallagnol, and their team subverted criminal procedure," while Moraes conducts STF proceedings with "prudence and assertiveness."

Gilmar Mendes concluded his intervention by declaring that Alexandre de Moraes "fills the Brazilian nation with pride" by defending democracy with firmness.

In response to the accusations, Moraes' office issued a statement clarifying that the minister rigorously followed legal procedures in his investigations.
