247 – The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) rebuffed, this Wednesday (26), the U.S. State Department’s warning against Brazil over an alleged act of censorship.

"Respect for sovereignty is a two-way street with all U.S. partners, including Brazil," stated U.S. diplomacy on the social network X. "Blocking access to information and imposing fines on U.S.-based companies for refusing to censor individuals living in the U.S. is incompatible with democratic values, including freedom of expression."

The statement came shortly after a U.S. House of Representatives committee approved a bill that could bar Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes from entering the country and lead to his deportation. The proposal prohibits foreign officials who take censorship measures against American companies. The measure is a reaction to Moraes' decision to suspend the social network X in Brazil.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement reaffirming that it will not allow distortions regarding the national scenario and will not open space for external interference.

"The State Department's statement distorts the meaning of the Supreme Court's decisions," says the document, which highlights: "The Brazilian state and its republican institutions were the target of an anti-democratic orchestration based on mass disinformation."

The statement also emphasizes that the Lula government values freedom of expression, contrary to what figures from the U.S. far right claim: "Freedom of expression, a fundamental right enshrined in the Brazilian legal system, must be exercised... in accordance with the other prevailing legal precepts, especially those of a criminal nature."
