Professors at 25 Federal Universities End Strike
The interruption of the strike does not mean the immediate return to classes and other academic activities

Professors from at least 25 federal universities have already decided to end the strike that began in mid-April, according to Agência Brasil.
The deadline for teachers to hold assemblies at their universities to analyze the government proposals and decide on the return to classes ends today (21). The consultation in the 55 universities was determined by the national command of the university teachers' strike, linked to the National Union of Higher Education Institution Teachers (Andes).
However, the end of the strike does not mean the immediate return to classes and other academic activities. Each university has administrative autonomy to reestablish its calendar for the completion of the 1st academic semester of 2024 and the beginning of the 2nd academic semester of 2024. For example, the professors at the University of Brasília (UnB) announced that they would return to classes next Wednesday (26).
Over the weekend, the national strike command will tabulate the responses from the union sections, regional secretariats, and local strike commands regarding the continuation or end of the strike movement. They will also analyze the schedule for resuming activities and beginning makeup classes, whether next week or only at the beginning of July.
The return to classes also depends on the work performed by the technical and administrative staff, who, among other activities, are responsible for processing new academic calendars and handling any enrollment cancellations in university departments.
The Federation of Unions of Technical and Administrative Workers in Public Higher Education Institutions of Brazil (Fasubra) is also analyzing the results of the round of assemblies of the base entities held throughout this week.
