247 - The Senate plenary approved, on the night of this Wednesday (13), the nomination of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, to the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The nomination was made by President Lula (PT) to replace the vacancy left by Minister Rosa Weber, who retired from the Court in September.

The final vote was 47 in favor, 31 against, and 2 abstentions. Dino needed at least 41 votes to be approved for the Supreme Court. Earlier, the minister was also approved by the Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) after an extensive hearing of more than 10 hours, with a score of 17 votes in favor and 10 against in the committee.

WHO IS FLÁVIO DINO - Flávio Dino de Castro e Costa was born in São Luís (MA), in 1968. He has been a lawyer and professor of law at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) since 1993. He holds a master's degree in public law from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and taught at the Law School of the University of Brasília (UnB) from 2002 to 2006. He was a federal judge for 12 years and held the positions of secretary-general of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), president of the Association of Federal Judges of Brazil (Ajufe), and advisor to the presidency of the Supreme Court.

From 2007 to 2011, he was a federal deputy. He then presided over the Brazilian Institute of Tourism (Embratur) from 2011 until 2014, when he was elected governor of Maranhão for the first time. He governed the state for two consecutive terms, from 2015 to 2022, and resigned from the governorship in April 2022 to run for the Senate for the first time. He took office in 2023, but soon took leave to head the Ministry of Justice.
